Mike Tyson’s troubled past can’t begin to compare to the tragedy of the last two days…

Tragically, Mike Tyson’s youngest daughter dies due to injuries sustained in an accident involving a treadmill at her Phoenix home.   I don’t care that Mike Tyson is involved, I do care that it was a 4 year old girl and this is a tragic accident involving common household things.

Tyson’s life hasn’t been easy and a lot of it was brought on by himself.  This is not something you like to see happen to someone who is trying to pull himself together.  The Tyson documentary film is soon to be released and I can only imagine the attention it will get due to this accident.

Tyson is a warrior, not a rocket scientist, a boxer, not a banker, a fighter, and definitely not a lover, a kid from Catskill NY, not a neurosurgeon, he’s a famous athlete, but not a role model.

He is also a dad and I feel badly for him.

Jon and Kate…plus a divorce attorney…maybe

kate-jon-gosselin-gDamn this is getting good!  If you haven’t seen in every grocery store aisle by now, the parents of the Gosselin clan are having some issues.  Jon and Kate Gosselin are in the middle of a nasty story of Jon spending a late evening with a 23 year old woman.   He denies it as nothing more than a friendship…riiight.

Kate is turning into a money hungry, wench and the show is completely “staged” according to her sister in law in recent blogs.  The fact of the matter, the Gosselins are doing well because of the show.   The show makes them a lot of money and tons of freebies.  Their new house is around $1.1 million compared to the last house which was in the 200’s…hmmm.

I do think the media is having a blast with this story but who can blame them.  The family agreed to become public and have their lives exposed on national television and this is fishbait for tabloids.  On the premiere last night Jon made an insightful comment, he said one day his “kids will google him and he needs to have an explanation”.  Well spoken, sad, and true rolled up into one.

I do have empathy for the couple for getting themselves into this mess based on pure naivety.  Naive to the fact that being on TV will ruin you if you make one false move.  This show is no longer about the kids and that’s the sad truth as it’s now a saga of the two adults who happen to have ten kids.

The show might become more popular for the wrong reasons, but hey…that’s entertainment !

Prime time NFL broadcasting and air travel go hand in hand…don’t they?

Odd coincidence and baffling, but did you notice that there are now two prime time sports broadcasters who have a known serious phobia to air travel?

Tony Kornheiser and John Madden.   Tony Kornheiser’s fear is so serious that he has just stepped down from ESPN’s Monday Night Football crew.   Though he is now retired, it’s well documented of Madden’s fear of flying and we all grew quite accustomed to seeing his pimped out bus travel from city to city.  Madden scooted around the country in a 4500 lb motor coach super bus, since he quit hopping on planes in 1979.  Madden’s ground travel was estimated to cost around $4000 a week in general expenses, so it’s a pricy phobia!  Madden was also raking in around $40 million a year in broadcasting salary, ACE Hardware, and Outback Steakhouse spokes person gigs…so he could easily afford the ground travel.

Kornheiser still flew as part of ESPN’s schedule but this year it finally caught up to him…the fear that is.   Here’s the part I don’t get, when these guys land these high profile broadcasting gigs they know it’s gonna involve a ton of travel!!  It’s a basic requirement of the job, you don’t travel, you don’t broadcast the game.  It’s not a job that “logging from home” will cut it like the rest of us.  The games are spread all over the country and their job requires them to be where the game is.  It worked for Madden but it’s not working for Kornheiser.

Not to mimic the article, but I was not a big fan of Kornheiser and the other two jokers, Jaworski, and that other dude.  I’m too lazy to Google his name.  The focus of this blog is not who I liked anyway, just the irony of people in a travelling job who are essentially afraid to travel…hmmm…that’s it.

With car dealerships going bye bye…do we all start walking now?

1525752The news is bleak and and what is being touted as a cost cutting measure is going to royally screw us.  Chrysler announced yetserday that nearly 800 dealership franschises agreements would be ending.  This doesnt mean that all dealers who sell Chryslers will close, it simply means they wont be selling you one anymore.

Bigger dealerships will feel the pain but won’t all together die because of this decisions.  Smaller family owened businesses that only sell Chryslers are finito.

Just today GM has announced a similar kick in the ass.   So where does that leave us?  Not sure considering that nobody is buying cars or else these closures would not be occuring and GM would not be about one month from bankruptcy protection.

I have this fear that the car buying experience is going to get worse rather than better.  I mean worse in the sense that so many other outlets are opening up for people to buy cars that the process of buying one is going to change.

But that’s is a good thing right?  Well yes and no…depends on who you are.  I like the advent of online car buying but like I have mentioned in other posts, some buyers don’t.  Dealerships suck that’s a given, but it’s hard to throw down cash on a vehicle you cant plop your ass into.

This is a sickening feeling watching these dealerships go up in smoke.  Lost jobs, lost profits, loss of competitive advantage pricing, what else?

I’ll be anxious to see what the 2009 Auto Shows will be like this year.  Will that many people get all giddied up over $250, 000 concept cars when they can’t afford to visit a dealer and buy a sedan for $15000?  Enough with the hype of super, jetsetting sports cars and uber tekky, GPS synched computers on wheels.   How about coming out with affordable, eco friendly cars which don’t break the bank of the manufactures (thank you UAW!!!!!!) and…do not put the average car buyer into a high percentage loan they can’t afford.

Have you noticed a lot of people riding busses and buzzing around on scooters?  So have I.

As big as the industry is, it’s hard to gauge how all of us will truly feel the effect but we will soon, before the summer is over I bet.

I wonder if the Taliban is intimidated by pink boxers

It’s late, you’re tired. Having fun before you laid down you put on your pink boxer shorts with the little “I love NY” logo all over them. You’re wearing a red t-shirt from your favorite frozen custard shop in your home town.  You start to drift off. Oh yeah, did I mention that you’re an Army Specialist in  Afghanistan and you were just jolted awake by an ambush?

Specialist Zachary Boyd did what he was trained to do – he jolted up, through on his flak jacket and helmet and ran out to defend their post along with his fellow soldiers.

It also just happen to be the same time that an Associated Press photographer was right behind him. This classic photo made it to the cover of the New York Times and all around the Internet.

Hitler really and truly lost his head…

rI guess this museum patron was none too happy with what he saw when entering the building.  A German man spoke his mind by promptly ripping off Hitler’s.

I don’t think I would have injured a guard in the process but this goes to show how well received ole’ Adolph is in the eyes of modern day Germans.

I buy a lot of items online, and I always like to look to see what other people who have looked at or purchased the same items are buying.  First, I need to disclaim that I did not search ‘wolf t shirt’ or anything similar on Amazon, I found this page the good ol’ fashioned way — I stumbled upon it on Gordonkeith.com, but just had to pass this one on.

So remember to keep in mind when you look for wolf t-shirts,  crazy pants and penis and Joe the Plumber books,  there are shopping voyeurs out there watching your steps. Check it out:

Facebook’s approach to “hateful” content…

Where is the line drawn?

Where is the line drawn?

The social networking giant has been taking heat on its willingness to allow specific hate related “Groups” to post pages on its site while the same time removing others.

Recently, a KKK group was removed by Facebook for violating it’s “hateful content” policy, however, it has not made any type actions towards a couple of pages which propagate that the Holocaust never happened.

The primary opponent of this allowance is Brian Cuban, attorney brother of Dallas Maverick’s owner Mark Cuban.  Cuban has published an open letter stating his utter disapproval and distaste for Facebook’s unwillingness to remove these two pages.

I have varying views on this.  I whole heartily agree that the Web should remain a free, open forum for the world in which viewpoints can be equally shared.  On the flipside, I do not think the message of hate should be allowed to randomly propagate on websites in which advertisers, sponsors, and millions of general innocent users interact with on a daily basis.   What I find ironic is that advertisers would not dare associate their service or products on TV stations or printed media for groups that preach hate, but essentially are doing that very thing by pimping ads on Facebook.  If Facebook continues to expand its acceptance of all genres and types of users, including those who preach hateful, disrespectful messages, then what happens to the credibility of the site?  Facebook stated in the article that it repeatedly reviews these issues and takes the necessary steps to hold the website to a standard.

As sick and disgusting as some of these groups can be; the web is still their best medium to enlist followers and spread these messages.   I am also a firm believer that social networking sites, like Facebook, need to do the right thing.

Verdict is in…too much food will make you a pudge!

Read the surprising new study!  This also just in to the Heard it in a bar news desk:  The sky is blue and Elvis is alive.

Manny Ramirez…scratch another tally mark on the “why baseball disappoints” board

2723277067_27a88de236Manny Ramirez will be having a true summer break now that he will be sitting out for 50 games, yep 50, for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug.

Ramirez recently signed a $45 million dollar deal with LA and has led them to 20 wins already.  He’ll now be taking a break.

According to the Ramirez camp, he visited his personal doctor for another health related issue and was prescribed a drug of which neither he nor the doc knew was banned.  Bullcrap!

If there is a banned list of substances, then every damn baseball player and their respective physicians should know what they are.

Either the league does a crappy job of passing out that little leaflet that says:  “Here are things you can’t swallow”…or the players are arrogant, self-serving bastards that push the boundaries of league rules over and over and over and over again.

There is a lot of competition to be a performer in MLB, but jesus christ this is getting old.
