Lost is over and I actually miss it…

560.lost.promo.lc.031109Six years of roller coaster loop de’ loops, dozens of undeveloped characters, and a story line that was as easy to follow as a chicken in a barnyard.

If you didn’t watch Lost, you missed a show which challenged the fan to no end.  Season after season of questions, theories, hypotheses’, cliff hanging plots, and a series of hidden messages and themes.

It began with a crash and turned into an expose of human nature and the complexity of interaction.

At times, the show pissed me off because just when a storyline seemed complete, the curve ball was thrown and there was always something just off, just missing, just left unanswered, and just off center enough to encourage you to strap yourself in and get ready for the next season.  This made me mad because I loved the show so much and I wanted to see closure, but then again I didn’t.  I wanted to know what the smoke monster was, but the mystery of not knowing was more intriguing.

I had a hunch that nobody had survived the Oceanic crash, but the development of the island as a central theme of the story started to sway me differently.  How could this be an afterlife with all of this other stuff going on??  The Dharma complex, the others, the hatch, the well, and the light in the middle of the island.

Maybe I should have known better, maybe I should have not bought into the hype like I did and went with my gut.  Well, in a way I did, every week and every season I would tell myself, “oh yeah, this is some sort of test or challenge to these people, a redemption, a time of judgement.”   Then in a complete switch of events, whatever theory I had was shattered.  That was the real hook of the show, it was flawed, it was confusing, and it constantly tempted you to come back for more.

The show is over and those who followed these characters for six years know the truth.  It wasn’t a big surprise but it still surprised, if that makes sense.  Some thought it was anti-climatic and others I know were bawling their eyes out in sadness.

I will not judge the quality of the ending, but I am glad it ended.  I can put these people to rest once and for all…though I will miss them.

Teetering on the edge…how does Bret Michaels do it?

michaels2 I have to give Bret Michaels credit, he has battled a life of disease and he keeps bouncing back.

At the age of six, he was diagonosed with Type I diabetes and has struggled to maintain his health all the while becoming an 80’s glam metal rock god, a history of hard hard partying, and what seems to be a constant limelight on his fame and health.

Over the years, Michaels has nearly died numerous times from a lethal mix of booze and his own personal battle with diabetes.  Just in the last year, Michaels has suffered an emergency appendectomy, just weeks later he’s rushed back to the emergency room with an intense headache which turns out to be a brain hemorrage.  Just the other day, he is again rushed to the ER while suffering a mild stroke and doctors discover a small hole in his heart called a Patent Forum Ovale.  The condition is treatable but Michaels will be forced to rest again.

I see Michael’s story as a sort of wake up call to the average person out there who is convinced they are in tip top shape.  Granted he has not taken the greatest care of his internal organs over the years, but looking at him, he’s thin, fit, and has the financial means to eat right and take care of himself.  What scares me is the thought that diabetes has taken a toll on him.  This internal tornado has been wreaking havoc on his body over the years and sadly I think his own doctors know why this is happening.  It’s a very hard condition to control, it takes constant discipline, sugar control, and lifestyle modifications forever.   Michaels is a shining example of the sick kid who has masked a serious condition for years with glitz, fame, sex, music, and any poppy distraction that the normal sufferer isn’t able to do.

Maybe he’s been hit with incredibly bad luck the last six months, is he being tested by somebody bigger.  Be what it may, I hope he pulls through this and he can get back to the semi-slimy Bret we love to follow.

A softball player who just happens to know the law, sign her up…

elena-kagan1Does this woman really matter to you?  If you look deep into the background of a possible supreme court justice, do you want actual bench experience or do you prefer someone who knows the law and has written a few hundred papers on well…the law?

Princeton graduate, Harvard Law Dean,…on the surface at least Elena Kagan would seem qualified to become a judge.   She has clerked for several well known justices, practiced law in the late 80’s and early 90’s, served as counsel under President Clinton, worked her way to Dean, and there is no doubt she is well versed in case law, precedent, state statues, etc.

Does not having any actual bench time deflate her credentials?  Personally, I don’t think it does and based on sheer knowledge and the circles she has been exposed to, Ms. Kagan could successfully perform her duties as justice.

So is she gay?  Does it matter to me, no.  Ok, let me digress here for a second, this is where I LOVE watching the news and reading media outlets.  Now to give you some background on this, recent photos have surfaced of Kagan playing softball.

There has always been a belief that softball was an outlet for lesbian athletes.  It’s not something that some jerkoff at a bar conjured up one night with his buddies, the sport became popular after WWII and caught on very quickly with many female, gay athletes.  Books have been written about it, one being “Diamonds are a Dykes Best Friend” by Yvonne Zipter.   Yes, that is an actual book, look it up.

According to the history, gay females found solace in playing this new sport which over the years has predominantly become a female based activity, thus even more perpetuating the stigma of softball and lesbians.  Sooooo…we have  a pic of Kagan playing softball…tada!

Strike up the butch band (insert marching people here and balloons aloft), brass section blaring (la da da da la)…here come the cameras…here comes the media (insert clowns dawning tricycles and small cars here)

Let’s focus on her legal experience first, either she makes the grade and gets appointed, or she doesn’t.  Once she becomes a justice or if she fails to get swarn in, the gay softball sideshow can continue on and makes for great pre-local news appetizer.  If  I sued a gay person for doing me wrong and I knew a presiding judge was openly gay, I wouldn’t worry much.  Unless of course I lose the case and being a dick, I would countersue for orientation discrimination.   SO THERE !!!!!!      That’s how our world turns, love it.

Can we for once leave this out of the appointment process?  I know gay rights are important but will a justice really make “all” the difference for a particular segment of the population, I don’t believe it.

We’ve seen how much real influence the Supreme Court has on state’s rights when it comes to gay unions and marriage…end of story.  The state of Arkansas could legalize the union of llama and field mouse, repeal it the next day, impose the right again, so on and so on…where is the Fed?

Good luck Ms. Kagen..appointment or not I won’t lose sleep.

When it rains for Tiger, it pours…

The muscle of this man has shrunk and shows more sign of atrophy as each new story surfaces.  This blog did a pretty good job of leaving Tiger alone and I have to say after the recent events, I still stick to that credo.

The bomb of the last couple months has dropped, the shrapnel has scattered and settled, so what now.

A man who’s golf game is struggling (mentally the dude can’t be ready yet) he took time off to heal and his game is suffering because of it.  He will never heal, he is a superstar who’s star came crashing into a dark, murky swamp somewhere in south Florida earlier this year.

A looming split from his wife, can’t say this is a surprise and also testament to the class that Elin has maintained throughout this entire ordeal.  Not standing by Tiger during his press conference was a sign of a strong woman who was never in the limelight even when times were good for the family.

Tiger loses his swing coach earlier in the week, most likely due to other circumstances then what we assume, but you never know….only Hank Haney knows deep down inside why he made the decision to resign.

I don’t want the world to feel sorry for Tiger, this is not the Tiger of old, he’s not that hero anymore.   He’s a mortal man now, actually he always was.  The world has removed the rose colored glasses and unveiled a young guy who made choices, sadly, not a lot of good ones here of late.   He is still a great golfer who will bounce back and arrive on top of his sport again.  Elin will secretly live her life as well out of the limelight, bless her and I hope she succeeds at doing that.

I don’t want to see any more revalations and saucy stories from other girls on his candy list, what good will it do?   Give Entertainment Tonight more filler time, provide Inside Edition the hit of the day…enough.  I have been a little easy on some other athletes, and in hindsight, maybe a little too light.  Fame, power, and constant public exposure has its price, some pay, other’s get away with it.

It will happen again…

Brittany Murphy’s death is troubling

198134_meds_12232009Not that it’s another tragic celebrity death, not that it’s another young  life taken so early…these are all troubling and sad in their own right.

It’s another tragic case of someone getting caught up in the web of drugs…the legal type!

It truly saddens me that so many of these stars seek out more and more prescription drugs in a never ending spiral of adding another and another to the mix.  All the while not realizing that these too are toxic substances if used in excess or used in the wrong combination.

I hope Miss Murphy did not have an underlying heart condition which went undetected, only time and further medical examination will determine that.

I also hope her death is not overshadowed by news of bedside drugs and eating disorders.  Already, the media is jumping all over the story that an assortment of prescription drugs were discovered in her room and she recently appeared stick thin.   So I ask…

Hollywood…why must you render this life on your victims?

Hollywood…how come you don’t protect your own?

Hollywood…is the almighty dollar and image always going to trump human decency, compassion, and care?

Hollywood…why do you bless us with talented and energetic individuals only to extinguish their light and take them away just as fast?

Hollywood…does anyone ever hold you accountable?

We can’t help these troubled souls because you keep us away with your body guards, iron fences, and tinted windows.

Whether it be meds or an eating disorder…they both are a result of pain.   The outside world sits idle and watches you eat up and spit out those who chase your dream.

They have the courage to leave their live’s behind in order to chase your dream.  At least offer them a life afterwards if the chase falls short.

Internet fun for the weekend…

By far one of my favorite websites of late is called GraphJam.com.  Essentially, the website attempts to break down the world and how we interact with it in a series of graphs.   It is hilarious when you see how the world around us can be so easily summed up in a pie or bar chart.   It all makes perfect sense.

Users are encouraged to submit their own which are reviewed and posted if found to be humorous.  Included are some great examples…enjoy!

Have great weekend !!

So why are more companies not yet hiring?

unemploymentU.S. Workers are still filing a large amount of unemployment claims and this is after five weeks of declines in this area.

Where are the culprits and which industries are still hurting?  It’s apparent as we have seen over the last year is that a gradual stabilization of the economy does not naturally translate to a increase in the labor market stability.

The gripping effects of the recession have no indications of going into a double dip as economist like to call it, trade gaps are narrowing, imports and exports are up, and yet bottom line profits are not improving.

Where are the jobs going and why even after the influx of billions of dollars in stimulus funds…the unemployment rate still hovers around 9-10%?

Hot new golfer to challenge Tiger’s limelight

john-dalyIt’s tough not to hear Tiger Woods’ name in the media of late with all this marital infedelity hoopla and now text messages coming out from his brood of women across the country.

Frankly, it’s getting old and let’s focus our attention on those athletes who don’t get all the attention.

Especially those golfers who shy away from the media hype, don’t get into trouble with the law, and keep a very low profile.

For instance, this fancy clad duffer is making an impression on the golf community.  A relative unknown among the ranks of professional golf but slowy and steadily making the upward swing into the ranks of Tiger, Phil, and Padraig.

Athletic, fit, trim and I cannot wait to watch him….err wait…who is this guy?

This is JOHN DALY !!!!

For those not familiar, Daly has lost a total of 185 lbs after Lap Band surgery.  He is exercising, not drinking as much, and is now forced to control is eating.  You’ve got to be kidding me!!??!!??!!

Eight years of success turns into one year of demise for Kansas coach Mark Mangino

maginosThe story and the jokes can finally come to an end.  Sports fans throughout the midwest have been following the fate of KU head football coach Mark Mangino and allegations that he verbally and physically abused his  players.

Well fans, now that he has resigned and the weeks of rumors and headlines about his coaching future will likely cease, what now?

If the allegations are true then Mangino and his family will have to deal with the matter outside of KU football and it’s possible we will see little coverage of the story anymore, we might, but news about “has beens” is never interesting and doesn’t last long.

I’m all about treating people fairly and respecting the rights of individuals and to think that a coach might be over the top and potentially abusive to players is unacceptable.  I have touched on the earlier stories of coaches literally working their players to death and it’s inexcusable, it’s football…not the Roman gladiator training program.

What has always rubbed me wrong is how perspectives and viewpoints are influenced.  In the world of competitive collegiate sports, it’s obvious that viewpoints are swayed by wins and losses.    One year ago I attended a KU/KState football game in Lawrence, KS and the energy was incredible, fifty thousand screaming fans, aroma of BBQ in the air, beer flowing, and the weather was perfect.

The KU football team comes bouncing out of the locker room facility and the place erupts and behind the team walks  this short, very heavy though almost regal figure…Coach Mangino.

Yes, he is a very heavy man and he is short…he looked more like a godfather then a college football coach.  The man had an entourage, students alike were chanting Mangino, young guys wearing the infamous “My Coach can eat Yours” T-shirt, however, the man was beloved and he entered the field like Elvis would have been greeted entering a concert venue.

Why?  KU was playing well and they had just come off an Orange Bowl victory.  The man could do no wrong, he was adored, on all the radio shows, the center of attention, the KU football program was in a state of euphoria which hadn’t been seen in years or maybe never.

Football was never KU’s sport until Mangino came along and it will only improve with a qualified replacement .  The fat jokes are funny to a point but what happens is that he is eventually defined by his personal appearance.  When your team is 12-1, obviously you’re untouchable and these young men who supposedly suffered at the hands of Mangino apparently never came forward or it just wasn’t the right time.

I am in no way condoning the abuse of players, but do losing coaches have to endure more than the feeling of failure that comes with a losing season?  It has to be compounded by outside influences deciding to come forward?  Maybe Coach Mangino got cocky and aggressive with his new found success, maybe his level of expectations rose to a point that he tolerated very little from his players, maybe KU football players for the first time finally experienced life as losers in a WINNING PROGRAM!!   Ding Ding!   I don’t imagine Bob Stoops is a fun guy to be around when the Sooners lose and I don’t imagine practices are cupcakes and sweet tea.

Bham! Your team is now 5-7 and you make horrible coaching decisions in your own end zone, you’re history.  I am very anxious to see if these lawsuits and reports of abuse will actually come to fruition and formal charges carried out against him…or was this a nice, vindictive way to oust a head coach out of a program that only ten years ago was the laughing stock of the Big 12.

Let’s hope Bill Self doesn’t contract some glandular condition which balloons him to 300 lbs…I can only imagine how quickly the search for a new coach will be underway.
