Brittany Murphy’s death is troubling
Not that it’s another tragic celebrity death, not that it’s another young life taken so early…these are all troubling and sad in their own right.
It’s another tragic case of someone getting caught up in the web of drugs…the legal type!
It truly saddens me that so many of these stars seek out more and more prescription drugs in a never ending spiral of adding another and another to the mix. All the while not realizing that these too are toxic substances if used in excess or used in the wrong combination.
I hope Miss Murphy did not have an underlying heart condition which went undetected, only time and further medical examination will determine that.
I also hope her death is not overshadowed by news of bedside drugs and eating disorders. Already, the media is jumping all over the story that an assortment of prescription drugs were discovered in her room and she recently appeared stick thin. So I ask…
Hollywood…why must you render this life on your victims?
Hollywood…how come you don’t protect your own?
Hollywood…is the almighty dollar and image always going to trump human decency, compassion, and care?
Hollywood…why do you bless us with talented and energetic individuals only to extinguish their light and take them away just as fast?
Hollywood…does anyone ever hold you accountable?
We can’t help these troubled souls because you keep us away with your body guards, iron fences, and tinted windows.
Whether it be meds or an eating disorder…they both are a result of pain. The outside world sits idle and watches you eat up and spit out those who chase your dream.
They have the courage to leave their live’s behind in order to chase your dream. At least offer them a life afterwards if the chase falls short.
So why are more companies not yet hiring?
U.S. Workers are still filing a large amount of unemployment claims and this is after five weeks of declines in this area.
Where are the culprits and which industries are still hurting? It’s apparent as we have seen over the last year is that a gradual stabilization of the economy does not naturally translate to a increase in the labor market stability.
The gripping effects of the recession have no indications of going into a double dip as economist like to call it, trade gaps are narrowing, imports and exports are up, and yet bottom line profits are not improving.
Where are the jobs going and why even after the influx of billions of dollars in stimulus funds…the unemployment rate still hovers around 9-10%?
Eight years of success turns into one year of demise for Kansas coach Mark Mangino
The story and the jokes can finally come to an end. Sports fans throughout the midwest have been following the fate of KU head football coach Mark Mangino and allegations that he verbally and physically abused his players.
Well fans, now that he has resigned and the weeks of rumors and headlines about his coaching future will likely cease, what now?
If the allegations are true then Mangino and his family will have to deal with the matter outside of KU football and it’s possible we will see little coverage of the story anymore, we might, but news about “has beens” is never interesting and doesn’t last long.
I’m all about treating people fairly and respecting the rights of individuals and to think that a coach might be over the top and potentially abusive to players is unacceptable. I have touched on the earlier stories of coaches literally working their players to death and it’s inexcusable, it’s football…not the Roman gladiator training program.
What has always rubbed me wrong is how perspectives and viewpoints are influenced. In the world of competitive collegiate sports, it’s obvious that viewpoints are swayed by wins and losses. One year ago I attended a KU/KState football game in Lawrence, KS and the energy was incredible, fifty thousand screaming fans, aroma of BBQ in the air, beer flowing, and the weather was perfect.
The KU football team comes bouncing out of the locker room facility and the place erupts and behind the team walks this short, very heavy though almost regal figure…Coach Mangino.
Yes, he is a very heavy man and he is short…he looked more like a godfather then a college football coach. The man had an entourage, students alike were chanting Mangino, young guys wearing the infamous “My Coach can eat Yours” T-shirt, however, the man was beloved and he entered the field like Elvis would have been greeted entering a concert venue.
Why? KU was playing well and they had just come off an Orange Bowl victory. The man could do no wrong, he was adored, on all the radio shows, the center of attention, the KU football program was in a state of euphoria which hadn’t been seen in years or maybe never.
Football was never KU’s sport until Mangino came along and it will only improve with a qualified replacement . The fat jokes are funny to a point but what happens is that he is eventually defined by his personal appearance. When your team is 12-1, obviously you’re untouchable and these young men who supposedly suffered at the hands of Mangino apparently never came forward or it just wasn’t the right time.
I am in no way condoning the abuse of players, but do losing coaches have to endure more than the feeling of failure that comes with a losing season? It has to be compounded by outside influences deciding to come forward? Maybe Coach Mangino got cocky and aggressive with his new found success, maybe his level of expectations rose to a point that he tolerated very little from his players, maybe KU football players for the first time finally experienced life as losers in a WINNING PROGRAM!! Ding Ding! I don’t imagine Bob Stoops is a fun guy to be around when the Sooners lose and I don’t imagine practices are cupcakes and sweet tea.
Bham! Your team is now 5-7 and you make horrible coaching decisions in your own end zone, you’re history. I am very anxious to see if these lawsuits and reports of abuse will actually come to fruition and formal charges carried out against him…or was this a nice, vindictive way to oust a head coach out of a program that only ten years ago was the laughing stock of the Big 12.
Let’s hope Bill Self doesn’t contract some glandular condition which balloons him to 300 lbs…I can only imagine how quickly the search for a new coach will be underway.
Tiger’s “cat” is almost out of the bag
Of course we couldn’t wait too long before throwing in our own two cents about the Woods story, it wouldn’t be American!
I’m getting to the point where I’m getting angry because this is now a public issue.
It’s private until Tiger hopped behind the wheel and crashed his vehicle.
It’s private until the police are called and a report is called in of a man appearing to be unconscious laying in the grass.
A private matter does not erupt into the street with a crazed blond woman smashing out the windows of a $70, 000 SUV.
A private matter does not involve neighbors supposedly hearing Woods screaming “You’ve ruined Thanksgiving, way to go!”
A private matter sure as hell does not involve state troopers, a trip the ER, and neighbors.
This is a classic “who done it?” scenario playing out for the Woods’ family and I wish Tiger would man up and admit what happened. This didn’t happen behind closed doors and it was not hidden from the authorities so there is nothing private about it.
The stories are swirling and most seem pretty credible based on how this accident played out. It’s been thought Tiger’s wife beat him with his own clubs and forced him to flee the house, thus crashing his SUV. Now this version sounds the most dramatic, and all kidding aside, does sound like a likely scenario. Even Wanda Sykes is chiming in and wonders if Tiger’s wife has just as good club selection as he does….funny.
Regardless, it happened and not allowing the police to do their job is pathetic. Tiger, you’re rich and the best golfer in the world but you are also a tax paying citizen and when your domestic issues get out of hand, people will know.
No different then the Jones’es down the street …
Wow! Those facebook pics sure got some attention!
Interesting story out of Quebec, if you haven’t read the article, do so. Once again, a story comes along that just sends my editorial neurons out of whack.
So, you go to the doctor and are diagnosed with severe depression…so severe that she is forced to go on short term disability for a year from her employer…all the while receiving payments from her employer’s insurance carrier.
All of this sounds normal to me, except for one thing…the diagnosis of the depression. I am not a shrink and I don’t hob nob in the circles of shrinkdom and psychiatric medicine, but I am curious as to how “definitive” a diagnosis of clinical depression really is.
She was seen by a doctor, she was told she was depressed, she was also told to see friends as a way to get herself better…still sounds relatively normal to me….but…..
In my blogging view, if you can jump around the beach, visit your friends, smile for random party pics, and post them on your facebook account…how come you can’t wake up and go to work?
Insurance companies use these tactics all the time to avoid fraud and in many opinions other then mine, this woman committed insurance fraud, or at least in the eyes of the insurance carrier.
There are issues with what happened here. It is sad that insurance carriers are forced to take these measures because there is so much fraud in the claims arena, what other option do they have? Video taping customers is common practice especially when money is involved, money that ultimately is funded by you and I.
The insurance companies definition of “depressed” obviously differs from the doctor’s. All the while, Miss Blanchard fell victim to her own social networking profile (tch tch tch)….and her decision to post them was a costly one. (Oh and for all those “right to privacy” fanatics out there please shush yourself…the Internet isn’t private but you already knew that)
In the end, with a slick attorney, she will probably get her money back…but ask yourself something…after seeing an incident like this…are you sure you want to post some of those pics?
Palin…go away!
Seriously, I don’t care that you have a new book….I don’t care that you have a tattered relationship with your daughter’s “baby daddy“…and I find absolutely nothing of this fascinating in the least. It’s all over TV, she’s been on every talk show on earth….all for what? To increase exposure for a possible presidential run in 2012?
People, the woman quit her job as governor of Alaska…and she is now suddenly viable to be President? I typically love juicy stories in the media but this woman, no matter left or right wing, just doesn’t do it for me. The circumstances are boring and it’s just another public person with a normal dysfuctional family (we all have dysfunction).
I just don’t find her’s real interesting…
What is all the Chris Farley backlash for??
If you haven’t seen the commercial, it’s no doubt tough to see Chris Farley on the screen again.
Is the commercial tasteless? Come on….no.
Here is the article.
What I find alarming is that nobody is mentioning the fact that the families of these deceased celebrities are approving the use of the images.
Farley’s family agreed to the commercial being made and Direct TV cashes in on Farley’s image. So why is Direct TV the target of the backlash? I am sure Farley’s family is well compensated…quit whining. Oh and Direct TV has done this before with Heather O’Rourke from Poltergeist….again…the family’s consent.
Yeah, it’s funny, he was a funny guy and most of us remember him for his on screen antics. His death was tragic and it was avoidable, but many have died as a result of drugs and lifestyle. Elvis, John Belushi, both of which we see their image on TV quite often.
Elvis is the big one that comes to mind. If you remember a few years back I think Celine Dion did a duo with Elvis on an awards show using clever special effects…was there a backlash of his image being splattered across the country again? If there was, I didn’t hear about it.
I think Chris Farley is an easy target because he was loud, obnoxious, and his death was seen as a prophetic end to his life. How is that any different then Elvis or Belushi?
Farley’s been dead for almost 15 years…what is there some time requirement in which you can’t use someone’s image on TV?
Let’s remember Farley for the laughter and good times he brought us. I see him doing the fat guy little coat routine and I still laugh and say to myself “god that was funny”.
Maybe we should look at everything that is potentially tasteless…. Toddlers and Tiaras (pathetic but makes good TV), Jon and Kate (we all know this story) All the ”Housewives” series (shame what some of these women have become, but we still watch it)
There is so much garbage on TV, leave Farley’s 60 second commercial alone…it’s funny shit.
Is a truck actually an office?? Come on…
What a poor schmuck. Dude gets fined in his truck for lighting up.
According to the ordinance that was passed., yes the truck cabin is considered you office and if you light a cig, you’re busted. This is a weird one, but if you think about it…yeah…an independent truck driver does work out of his vehicle, so…..
I just found this story amusing.
Sprint/Nextel still bleeding internally
I want to see the company do well but why do subcribers continue to ditch the Kansas City based carrier?
Well, depends on who you ask. If you talk to employees, they tell you that Sprint has never recovered from the customer service issues of 5-10 years ago when they were still Sprint PCS. It’s a negatvie connotation which was slapped on the company because of a few too many rotten surveys, is it fair? Well, the context of a survey is generally fair and people respond based on experience, and sadly the experience was not good for thousands of Sprint customers. Even more damaging, news spread that Sprint was intentionally dropping certain “problem” subscribers because they could never be made happy. Basically, people who bitched too much were influenced to take a hike!
I don’t care of this was the truth or not, the facts are that Sprint is losing customers while the other carriers still flourish. I don’t even think it comes down to who has the better phones or better service, it has to be a mindset that one carrier is good and another is not good.
Sprint does a more than adequate job of pimping their name around, ownership of the NASCAR trophy, constant advertising on popular web outlets like Yahoo, a barrage of commercials in prime time slots, naming rights to halftime shows on major networks. But something is still not clicking with the general public.
How can a company that seemingly offers quality phones like the Palm Pre, Blackberry, LG, and Samsung still not make the money? They market great calling plans like call anywhere anytime to anyone , and they have very large name recognition…but still lose out to the other carriers?
Verizon has been dogged for not offering enough variations of mobile devices to it’s subscribers but yet still experiences record growth quarter after quarter. Investors predict that for every ten customers Verizon adds, Sprint loses one.
The news never seems to favor Sprint, just recently JD Power announced results from PC Magazine surveys of the wireless carriers.
Here’s what PC Mag had to say about Sprint’s results:
“Of the other major carriers, Sprint did a little better than last year and AT&T did a little worse, but both remain at the bottom with significantly worse than average (SWA) scores.” …
“Perpetual cellar-dweller Sprint has improved somewhat on all measures since 2008, but the company clearly still has a ways to go, especially with tech support, which readers gave a dreary 6.1 rating.”
In addition, talks of a Sprint takeover or partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG have been swirling over the wireless wires. Sprint is a hometown company that sadly, I don’t even use as my own wireless carrier. I can’t even explain it, it’s like sub consciously I buy into the negative hype. I only had Sprint service for two years and never had an issue, why did I change? Not sure. I recently spent time with friends in the mountains of Colorado and we all joked how one buddy’s phone worked and the others sucked.
The one’s that sucked were ATT, the phone that had a high altitude signal was Verizon, so what do I do, I switched to Verizon. I also felt Verizon offered more affordable plans and replacement incentives then ATT…hell I don’t know, they all have their positives and negatives. It all comes down to personal preference and experience, and it seems the Sprint experience has left a bitter taste in the mouths of too many wireless users.
Any truth to this?
MTV never lets us down…staged or not?
Either way, this was a rude move on his part. Career ending? No. Proves what kind of person he is? Yes. Enough said…
An apology is a wasted effort on his part. I like a lot of R & B artists, however, now I feel Easy E has more integrity then this clown. Actually, Easy E does have more integrity, he was a street thug and let us all know it through his rap music!
West is a punk, plain and simple.
