Wow! Those facebook pics sure got some attention!

15463173Interesting story out of Quebec, if you haven’t read the article, do so.  Once again, a story comes along that just sends my editorial neurons out of whack.

So, you go to the doctor and are diagnosed with severe depression…so severe that she is forced to go on short term disability for a year from her employer…all the while receiving payments from her employer’s insurance carrier.

All of this sounds normal to me, except for one thing…the diagnosis of the depression.  I am not a shrink and I don’t hob nob in the circles of shrinkdom and psychiatric medicine, but I am curious as to how “definitive” a diagnosis of clinical depression really is.

She was seen by a doctor, she was told she was depressed, she was also told to see friends as a way to get herself better…still sounds relatively normal to me….but…..

In my blogging view, if you can jump around the beach, visit your friends, smile for random party pics, and post them on your facebook account…how come you can’t wake up and go to work?

Insurance companies use these tactics all the time to avoid fraud and in many opinions other then mine, this woman committed insurance fraud, or at least in the eyes of the insurance carrier.

There are issues with what happened here.  It is sad that insurance carriers are forced to take these measures because there is so much fraud in the claims arena, what other option do they have? Video taping customers is common practice especially when money is involved, money that ultimately is funded by you and I.

The insurance companies definition of “depressed” obviously differs from the doctor’s.  All the while, Miss Blanchard fell victim to her own social networking profile (tch tch tch)….and her decision to post them was a costly one.   (Oh and for all those “right to privacy” fanatics out there please shush yourself…the Internet isn’t private but you already knew that)

In the end, with a slick attorney, she will probably get her money back…but ask yourself something…after seeing an incident like this…are you sure you want to post some of those pics?

Something I’ve Observed: Health care reform is a two headed snake

I am very confused and troubled by all the backlash and analysis of the health care reform proposals.  untitledHealth care is broken…or is it?  The current system employs millions of Americans in good paying, secure jobs in the private sector.  Those jobs could potentially be lost if more Americans were given “non-private” options at a cheaper price.

Most insured Americans obtain their insurance from an employer based plan…so if you were to lose that plan are you obligated to now enroll in the government backed plan even if the provisions or coverage was not as good as your employer based plan?  However, if the portability option comes into play, you take the plan with you…but you don’t have your job anymore, so do you now pay the actual premium for the plan that your emplorer paid or does it adjust to a more affordable price while you search for a new employer plan?  I am hearing that many private based plans could disappear with these changes.

I am all for dissemination of medical techniques and procedures.  We should all be granted much more freedoms when it comes to how we are medically treated and what medicinal approaches we are most comfortable with.   If a “panel” of experts is assigned to a specific medical discipline and given the task of deciding best courses of treatments for people, does that sever the relationships people already have with their doctor when it comes to health choices?  Are we placing too much medical decision making in the best interest of the “whole” or the “individual”?

It’s not that I think the plan reformation will be a complete move to a Socialist plan, I am not that definitive in my thinking.   I just want to be sure that our leaders do not sway so far from the private sector that it has a negative impact on the good things the system currently provides.

Which leads my thoughts in a completely different direction?  The current system is a market based health system in which individual, stock driven companies call most of the shots.  As much as I would like to believe there are regulatory forces in place, my gut tells me otherwise.  Multi billion dollar organizations have a lot of influence on health legislation and legislators.  Many ask the questions so why with all this market freedom, capital, and research funds…do we not have the magic number on treating societies major ills? (obesity, heart disease, cancer, etc)

With all the focus on health, exercise, and wellness…why is 90% of our country still fat?  Does the balance swing back towards the food industry’s interest as well?  I think so….actually I don’t understand any of the statistics, the trends, the habits, the demographics, or why nothing ever seems to level out in the long run.    Does anybody know, please help me.

Simple thought #5 – Why don’t civilized countries with National health care riot for private insurance

June 18, 2009 · Posted in Funny and Odd, Government, Health Care, Rant · Comment

Simple thought # 5

It occurred to me today that it is a little weird that all of these modern and civilized countries with socialized health care are not rioting for privatized medicine. You see, I hear all the time how bad socialized medicine sucks, and how people who have it hate it, so I find it weird that none of them, not a single one, have demanded private hospitals and private care as an option. I do admit that in some of the countries you can choose to pay a doctor or clinic to treat you, if you wish, but if the demand was truly high for these services there would be private hospitals popping up all over the place, and that is clearly not the case. Is it possible that nationalized health care is actually pretty good, and countries who have it, actually do a pretty good job of servicing the needs of the citizens?

Anyway, just a thought.

Simple Thought # 2 – Socialized Medicine, Good?

June 3, 2009 · Posted in Funny and Odd, Health Care, Rant · Comment

This is a new section called simple thoughts. They are not well thought out concepts, but rather just topics to hopefully stimulate your bar conversation.

Thought # 2 -

Met anyone lately who owns a business and thinks buying health insurance for employees is easy and cheap? I can only say insurance ain’t cheap, and employees for the most part do not realize just how much it costs for this all too often perceived entitlement. Healthy children and just the employee costs roughly $500, which is $6,000 a year. The employee still pays their deductible and none of the money that goes unused is put into a pool for when the employee actually needs it. Instead as people change careers, and therefore employers they are viewed as fresh meat and no goodwill carries forward. There is a case to be made here that a national health plan could carry forward payments, much the same way a health savings account does, and therefore offset in great deal the total liability of the medicaid and medicare system.

Just a thought.

Bdbdbdbdbd…dat’s just the Swine Flu ee’ee’verybody

porky_pigAs of right now, you probably don’t have it and very unlikely that you will.  They don’t currently have a vaccine to kill the media bug but it’s coming…god I can only pray!

Just follow a few standard and simple rules:

1) Don’t share glasses with a stranger in a bar right now

2) Don’t lick door handles in strange places

3) Don’t purposely run into the middle of someone’s sneeze pretending like it’s a sprinkler on a hot, summer lawn

4) Don’t eat fallen food that has surpassed the 20 second rule on your desk.  However, food dropped on the sidewalk, in my opionion, seems cleaner so the rule doesn’t apply.

5) You can eat pork and the pork industry wants you to know this.

It should be taken seriously to prevent any further cases like we have seen in Mexico.  The influenza virus can be very dangerous if not treated promptly, so take care of yourselves.  Wash your hands, cover your sneezes, stay home if you feel poopy, don’t fly to Mexico unless you have a bachelor party scheduled, and lastly drink a lot of water and get your Zzzzz’s.   Bust most of all, please do not freak out!

Awesome! More “pumps”…now in a pump

notimet1xa7Researchers have discovered a spray which can make a man last longer in the sack.   Beware of the occasional tingle and numbness.  The magic spray is almost here!  It does not grow hair or shrink your waistline.   Even better…it turns you into the 3.6 minute love machine.  They are absolutely steering scientific research in the right direction now and it’s about time.

So it’s technically three days worth of food…it still sounds awesome!

untitled3I would say you probably shouldn’t eat a 4 lb hamburger more than once or twice a month (or a year) but it’s probably the best 45 minutes you’ll experience.  A minor league baseball team in Michigan has introduced a 4 lb hamburger sold at the games for $20 bucks.   What is even more sad is I bet people buy this thing for only themselves, not the kids or the wife, or the guys in there row…nope…this is a solo burger which requires a pizza cutter to slice it.  Oh Yeah! (Actual picture of burger posted on link)

Why are we obsessesed with making hamburgers the size of VW bugs?  Well, it’s the novelty and exploitation of food.  Both of which are not a great thing considering kids starve in underdeveloped countries but maybe that’s the sign of a great (and self-indulgent) country we live in.

A country with huge waistlines, high blood pressure, heart disease (my personal favorite), no desire to exercise, high medical costs, and an assortment of other health related issues that nobody takes seriously.

We do, however, take the art of hamburger making seriously.  Food has become an obession for Americans.  We have reality shows about chefs, shows about people losing weight, BBQ contests, BBQ teams, cooking shows, nutritionists, caterers, street vendors, online grocery stores, and free sample Saturdays.   The food industry is not interested in your health, rather your money.  If you want to eat a 4lb hamburger and feel like a hot air baloon for 3 hours afterwards, that’s all on you sunshine.

Baseball, beer, and red faced belchers stuffing their hole with half a cow’s rump between bread…now that is just plain fun!

I sadly admit I would probably partake in this gluttony fest.  The sheer irresistable lure of a fat, juicy burger is hard for the mere mortal to resist.   On the flipside, it makes that run on the treadmill feel all that much better…if you wait at least a half hour.

Autism and Vaccines – court lays down the gavel against families

vaccine-fullA federal court ruled that there is no merit to claims that vaccines have caused Autism in some children.   The ruling was handed down by the federal vaccine court which was appointed to oversee all claims submitted by families.  I find this disturbing, not the ruling itself, but the fact that this issue requires a very delicate balancing act of ethics and scientific research.

As you know, the vaccines are manufactured by drug companies and there is a lot at stake when dealing with vaccines.  Insurance companies require them as part of health coverage for kids, doctors swear by them and curse those parents who choose not to vaccinate their kids, and there is a huge fundamental impact to health care if a link was actually discovered.

A court ruling is just that, a ruling.  The court probably meddled over hundreds of documents of big pharma propaganda touting all the health benefits of vaccines and the disastrous outbreak of disease that would ensue if they were suddenly stopped.

I agree that modern medicine has eradicated horrible diseases like polio, measles, mumps, rubella, etc.  I also think there could be a link between the two.  However, this is such a hard area of effective medical study because it would essentially require a placebo population of children to receive nothing, and a vaccinated group to receive the drugs.  It’s an easy study to suggest but a study that would possibly put a segment of children at risk for contracting other life threatening conditions.

Can you image how many medical groups would scream foul if such a study like this was undertaken?  Understandably, that is why this debate rages on.

There is yet again a large grass roots view that vaccines are useless.  Personally, this is one of the big grass roots movements that I don’t see making any real difference in how mainstream medicine approaches the use of regular vaccinations on children.

My own experience with the flu shot is varied.  Most people who get a flu shot sometimes feel sick, but you are not getting the flu!  The actual flu (Influenza) is a much worse condition and those who feel sick after a shot are simply feeling their immune system responding to the intrusion of the vaccine into the body.  Many shy away from flu shots because of the after effect or think the shot is a waste of time, hopefully those folks never actually get the “flu”.

Now when it comes to childhood vaccines – I want to believe there is a no link but I know the studies will never occur to prove it either way.  The current documented safety of these vaccines is all we can go on, are they legit, who knows.   The studies of vaccines without Thermarsol just don’t exist.  There is nothing to compare today’s vaccines to what we got as kids.  The problem is that the onset of Autism is not consistent in children who receive the vaccines.

It’s not like every single kid who gets a vaccine, ends up with the condition.   Some kids are fine, others develop it.  Some kids develop Autism without ever getting a vaccine from what I have read.  Is it a rare allergic reaction to the vaccine?  Is there a certain genetic profile that makes one child more susceptible than another?  Is it a genetic condition caused by other factors?

Austim rates are up…and up drastically.

There is no real proof that vaccines are a major cause.  The findings are so across the board that it makes sense that a court have no other recourse than to vote against.  I feel bad for the families, but I don’t think this is over.

The modern medical establishment helps save lives but do you know everything you should?

A bold statement but after all the media, studies, and bullcrap science out there- I’m starting to believe it.  There is a myth in this country that the medical establishment is 100% completely committed and focused on the health of Americans.  This is not an all out assault on those who practice medicine, work late hours in ER’s, or show a genuine passion for those patients who they care for.  The issue lies with the over marketing, over hype, and over bombardment that Americans are subject to from the drug companies.   Drugs can be good, drugs can save lives, but they also can hurt people.

Big pharma is a multi- billion dollar industry that thrives off the fear it instills in people.  The fear is disguised as “empowerment” and disguised behind such statements as  ”backed by clinical studies”  or seeing normal everyday people on TV who are suffering from such a debilitating condition that they are forced to “ask their doctor”.   I frankly get sick and tired of all the targeted advertisement hour after hour after hour that reminds me how sick I am and how I need to take control of my health, take control of my life, beat my cholesterol (which by the way there is a huge establishment which believes this is junk science),  and control my symptoms of depression.  The depression commercials are my favorite simply for the list of side effects alone…no thanks.  I have been through a lot of shit in the last two years, believe me and I would never pop this garbage in my mouth.  I’d rather be a little blue and snap out of it on my own.

There is no financial benefit to curing a disease and there is no reward in medicine any greater than the ability to treat someone for a condition and profit highly from it.  Don’t get me completely wrong here; I do believe there are medications out there that serve a valuable purpose in a sick person’s life.   Conditions like Parkinson’s, Leukemia, Sickle Cell, and other inherited diseases have very focused courses of treatment.  You noticed I left cancer off the list and I am not going to haul off and act like I know everything there is to know about cancer, however, there is a very very strong opposition out there to chemo therapy and unfortunately this is the standard course of treatment, that’s it!   There is no other alternative if you are treated by conventional medicine.  Whether you or a loved one chooses to receive chemo for treatment is a purely personal decision and it’s a decision made under a horrendous amount of stress, emotional pain, and financial burden.  Cancer can be prevented in many cases if you learn about food and how food intake effects your body.   You hate to see people struggle with cancer so maybe down the road in a not so distant future, there will be methods to prevent and abort it for good.  A woman who is newly diagnosed with breast cancer is scared out of her wits and will take any course of treatment recommended to her, and frankly, I probably would too.

There are websites out there if you only look for them and believe me, do not think that the old saying “don’t trust everything you read on the internet” rings true all the time.  In fact, there is a wealth of information that is at your fingertips when it comes to medications, supplements, and the healing properties of FOOD!

Let me get back to my rant earlier about how we get bombarded by drug ads and how big pharma has laced the pockets of the mainstream medical community and worse, our government.   First of all, I wish doctors would get back to their roots and begin the art of being a doctor again.  I get sick of sitting in an exam room and seeing fifty different cardboard displays, poster ads, and little trinkets on the counter with drug names and drug marketing.  You telling me you haven’t noticed?  How come you don’t see anymore pictures of fruits and veggies?  Why can’t there be a poster that lists the benefits of drinking water?  You see my point?   Sadly, doctors, nurses, dentists, and the like are surrounded by an empire.  A business to peddle legal substances in every corner office, every clinic, and every office cabinet.  It has turned Americans into hypochondriacs.  The drug companies unleash millions of dollars into their advertising campaigns and use the false sense of “health empowerment” to making you think that if you mention a drug to your doctor, then you are being very proactive!  Way to go Joe Acid Reflux, make that move and ask your doctor about Prilosec.  Keep eating spicy Mexican food three times a week, but at least you are making the right choice.

We are one of the few countries on the planet which allows direct TV to consumer marketing of pharmaceuticals.  The article is from 2002 and god only knows what the figures are for today’s ads.   The FDA is also to blame, I personally think this organization is a joke.  Not because a lot of other naysayers think it is too, but based on all the side effects of drugs, the lawsuits, the recalls, the need for new studies, and the non-disclosure of information, it’s a worthless organization that does not protect the people in this country.   Here are examples of how absurd and dictatorial the FDA policies are, which are not designed to benefit you.

  • Have you seen this on bottles? – “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”   It’s a catchy little phrase that producers of supplements are forced to put on a product that is not deemed a “drug”.  A drug means it has gone through intensive and long clinical studies to confirm it’s safety, reliability, and effectiveness in the treatment of disease.   These studies are performed by who else other than…the drug companies…tada!
  • These are the same clinical studies which gave us – Vioxx (pulled off the shelves for invoking heart attacks in people), Baycol(a cholesterol drug pulled for causing fatal rhabdomyolysis, a muscle disease that can be caused by any cholesterol lowering drug), Ketek (an antibiotic found to cause acute liver damage after it was released) Trust me, there has been more, Actos, Avandia, and Celebrex which got major heat a few years back, but is still being pimped!  Celebrex is an NSAID, and studies (outside of the drug companies) have shown that they can cause fatal cardiovascular events.  This commercial by far takes the cake and if you watch and listen carefully, you can decipher what they are really trying to tell you.  Phizer is basically rubbing in your face that whatever information is out there has to be false, or unclear, because their study didn’t find anything wrong!!   They use the guidance of the “FDA” to instill a sense of relief in consumers that it is still OK to buy Celebrex,  because both Phizer and the FDA have acknowledged on the bottle with a “warning” that there is a slight chance it could kill you.  (which of course makes you feel better that the FDA is aware of this, wheeew!)   They place Celebrex on a level playing field with other NSAIDs (like over the counter stuff) and because its an FDA approved drug with a long ass’ commercial, then it can be considered the best of the worse.  People- you’ve seen this and it is sickening and an utter insult to your intelligence.  This is targeted towards people who already have RA or the elderly who will unfortunately believe anything.
  • A doctor can prescribe a medication called Niaspan, which is a large dose of Vitamin B3 or also called Niacin.  If you get a prescription for Niaspan it will run you around 20 bucks, because it’s a large large dose of a clinical studied medication – this is bullshit.   You can buy Niacin right off the shelf at GNC for a hell of a lot cheaper and it’s the same fucking thing, Niacin.  Oh, and that statement from up above is clearly written on the bottle informing you that this cant be considered a “drug”.   Hmmm, that’s funny – when a doctor gives it to you as Niaspan, it’s a drug.  (Niaspan is made by Abbott Labs)  Interesting, it’s a company!
  • If you buy a huge ass bottle of Vitamin C, the bottle has that silly statement on it again…remember it’s not a drug and not intended to cure anything.   Again, I can buy an orange and there is no warning label.  Ahhh, but if I squeezed that orange into a bottle a made mention of how healthy it was.  The FDA can knock down my door at gunpoint and arrest me for selling something not clinically tested for safety.    But Vioxx has been !?!?!

If anyone wants to back the FDA and support the overall health value of medications that we see on TV, feel free to comment.    Like I said before, drugs do save people’s lives in certain circumstances, there are drugs that help control conditions which people suffer from.  They do the job because they target certain metabolic processes with synthetically produced chemicals.  You bet they do a good job because that’s what they are designed to do.  The problem is that too many of these drugs are profitable and are also hurting and potentially could kill people over time.   I take some drugs that I don’t want to be taking.  I have had some health issues hit me but I still believe firmly that I need to protect myself.  Supplements are good for you!  Don’t let anyone tell you any differently…a drug curves a symptom, that’s it.   Use your noggin and don’t place all your faith in what others sell you.  Doctors are smart people and I wish more of them would not be hesitant to discuss the real science behind the human body and how nutrition, natural substances, supplements, and food can have more of an effect on your body than a drug.   I don’t want to hear about the safety issues of supplements, or the safety issues of herbal substances.   You want to know why their safety is questioned?  It’s based on how they could potentially interact with a…you got it…drug.    It’s based on the fact that natural substances are not deemed worthy of medical study and I am a FIRM believer in this.   I don’t walk around outside popping evergreen trees and crab grass in my mouth with the thought it might cure a headache…but you know what..it fucking might!  This is not a radical viewpoint, it’s based on what goes on in our society today.  If the benefit is not financial, it has no benefit.   This is a disgusting reality.

Health Care and capitalism a match made in heaven

Some people think this is the future - Unfortunately it is the present and it must change

Health Care and capitalism a match made in heaven – seriously if you believe that you are more likely to go to heaven sooner rather than later.

There are truly intelligent people out there who say things like “Our rights were correctly identified by the founders of the United States: we are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If we study these rights, we can see that they are negative rights. Essentially, we are granted the right not to have our lives, freedom, or property taken away. These are our moral rights. Period. The proper (and original) role of our government is to protect the rights, or true entitlements, of its citizens.”

They then follow up that logic with beauties like this “We are not entitled to the materials or services (labor) of another person without that person’s consent. In a free society, those providing a good or service are compensated for it by receiving fair market value. This is the value set by free exchanges in the open market place. To quote Leonard Peikoff in “Health Care is Not a Right,” http://www.bdt.com/pages/Peikoff.html “Health care in the modern world is a complex, scientific, technological service. How can anybody be born with a right to such a thing?” “You have the right to work, not to rob others of the fruits of their work, not to turn others into sacrificial, rightless animals laboring to fulfill your needs.”

So let’s take a minute and think outside of the wacko box.  Let’s imagine a world where the government is not involved in health care at all.  In this imaginary world government does not participate in research, grants, medicaid or medicare, city or state or county run health programs and each person and corporation is totally responsible for funding their health care.

Now almost no one can afford to have a hospital in their home.  How often do even the super wealthy use a CAT scan machine?  Not often enough to purchase their own in most cases, and to have a surgery center on hold just for you is also not logical, because how often do you actually need surgery.  Additionally, not many people would want to go through the rigors of becoming a physician when so few people could actually afford to use their services.  There would simply not be enough job openings to make the field attractive to the masses.  The reduction in doctors would just be the start of the trickle down. Obviously there would be fewer medical devices built, so fewer people would be employed in these industries, and with no grant money available there would be very few research facilities at our universities and colleges.

Essentially with no government involvement in health care the industry would be virtually unsustainable.  My guess is it would revert back to the early 20th century and 19th century type of service.  Where your local doctor would work in your town and provide house calls.  They would be able to tell you in large part what actually ailed you, but they would have to send you to a centralized hospital in order to receive “traditional” services, because local hospitals would be nothing more than doctors offices with very limited technology.

In this world no research would be done into drugs or treatments that do not effect large portion of the population, because any discoveries would not be profitable and pure capitalism will not support philanthropy just for the sake of philanthropy. Additionally, the truly wealthy would be the only ones who could afford most long-term care services.

Now this is all doom and gloom, and to some people this world will sound horrific, but here is the really scary point of this story.

For 40 million Americans this ridiculous scenario would probably offer better health care than they currently receive.  The local doctor would probably be affordable, and the billing process would more than likely be reasonable, so you could pay a reasonable fee for the services you receive.  Additionally, if the doctor gives you grave news, and informs you that you will need to pay for centralized medical care you can just thank them and die.  This option is not much different for many people today.

Some people seem to believe those without health care are demanding health care services as a right, or an inherent right as a U.S. citizen.  I the vast majority of cases this is not true.  People do not believe health care is a right, just as they do not believe fire departments, police stations, libraries or city halls are built and staffed because it is a right.  People believe these services are provided for the betterment of society, and to protect the people who can not afford to purchase and staff these facilities on their own.  The truly ironic part, is no one is claiming we should stop funding these core services, because they just make since.  Virtually no one can afford to purchase a fire engine, and most people do not want every Tom, Dick and Harry running around with a firearm keeping the peace.

As an educated society we have determined that “some” things are better handled by the People for the People, and it is time we add health care to that equation.  We need to work on systematic reform.  We need to address not only the process of dispensing health care, but the foundation must be rocked.  We need centralized health care goals in research, infrastructure, personnel, disbursement and education.  These goals should be centralized one four levels.  There should be a national plan, a state plan, a county plan and a city plan.  Individual citizens should have a say in the elected officials who oversee their health care priorities, and be able to help their local officials help prioritize health care issues that most effect them.

If someone is sick or needs counseling they should be able to go to their local health care facility and visit their local physician who will assist them in the next steps required in their health care process.  Health care needs to be handled locally, but it must have the power of a nation behind it when that power is required.  Such as with epidemics, natural disasters and other unforeseen major events that would overwhelm local communities and in some cases even states.

This goal, nay this requirement is not some belief or desire that one man is dreaming.  This is something that a nation of great people must demand.  We can not watch people suffer.  We can not watch friends and neighbors go without treatment when treatments are available.  This is not what made us who we are today.  We are a great nation, and it is time we stopped putting dollars, and selfishness ahead of the common good.

I hope to readdress this issue in the near future, and I believe there are sound financial reasons for making these changes as well.  I believe once these changes are implemented it will have a positive affect on the economy, and if the entire process is implemented it will save money for the vast majority of businesses and people, as well as generating great strides forward with major health care issues.
